VAJRA DANCE | DANCES
The Dance of the Vajra is a result of the profound meditation of the Dzogchen master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu.
The master received the terma “The Vajra Dance Liberating the Six Classes of Beings into the Six Pure Dimensions” from 1989 on.
“Vajra” is a Sanskrit word and means diamond.
In the Dzogchen teaching the Vajra is a symbol of our essential nature, which is pure, clear and immutable like a diamond.
Practicing the Dance of the Vajra one can discover this real nature by being in the state of contemplation; and one can learn to maintain and stabilize this knowledge not only in sitting meditation but also being in movement. In this way it can become part of our daily life.
Since 1991 Chögyal Namkhai Norbu has taught four different Vajra dances.
While all four dances harmonize the three main aspects of our being – body, energy (or voice) and mind – each dance has its own specific characteristics.
The “Dance of the Song of the Vajra” is a complex symbolic dance connected particularly to the energetic aspect of our existence.
Through their sound, all the syllables of the Song of the Vajra are linked to specific energy points within our inner mandala, our body, and our outer mandala, the external dimension of the world.
Through sound, color and movement we can coordinate these energy points and create a harmonizing communication on the level of subtle energy.
The “Dance of the Vajra that Benefits Beings” is a symbolic dance of compassion.
It is more related to our physical level.
It frees the tensions related to our conditioning by different emotions.
The “Dance of the Three Vajras” is a symbolic dance of profound integration and purification.
It is more related to our mind level.
In this dance the three aspects of our existence – body, energy and mind – and their pure states, symbolized by the three syllables OM A HUM, are integrated into the state of non-dual contemplation.
The “Vajra Dance of the Dimension of Space (12 As)” is a symbolic dance of total integration beyond beginning or end; a dance of the recognition of our pure nature and real potentiality.
The four dances can be practiced separately or combined together.
By moving with the body, by singing the mantras with the voice, and by being in a state of contemplation with the mind, the three main aspects of our existence are balanced, and we can find a state of serenity and deep relaxation.
All four Vajra Dances are inseparably linked to the transmission of the Dzogchen Teaching. In order to receive all the benefits of the dances, one should have received this transmission from a Dzogchen master.
Everyone, however, can practice the “Dance of the Vajra that Benefits Beings”.
